Detachable Swan Neck System And How To Get The Best From Your Detachable Towbar

The majority of swan neck detachable range are 'vertical' (VK) systems which in most cases are invisible kits that are fully hidden behind the bumper once the detachable neck is removed. Most VK detachable towbars come complete with a single fold away electrical socket plate which enables the towbar electrics to be moved up behind the bumper when not in use. For security purposes, all detachable necks are lockable and come with a set of keys to ensure peace of mind when the vehicle is left with the neck in place. A storage bag is also supplied once the neck is removed for safe keeping.

It's aim is to manufacture all detachable's in the VK format due to their neat appearance when the neck is not attached. Unfortunately due to the design of some vehicles, it is not possible for a VK to be designed and fitted. This is usually due to insufficient space behind the bumper for the housing of the neck and the socket plate to be located. In this rare instance we still try to offer a detachable option by designing a 'horizontal' (HK) system. Whilst not being completely invisible this still offers a removable, lockable neck solution that enables customers all the benefits of a detachable system apart from it not being invisible.

The key features of a detachable system;

  • Invisible (Please note visibility of towbar and electrics is wholly dependent on vehicle make & model)

  • Easy to use

  • Detachable towball

  • Retractable electric sockets

  • Aesthetically pleasing solution for executive vehicles

  • Increased security (Lockable neck)

  • Full VCA / RDW approval

  • Minimal maintenance

  • Alko compatible

  • Will not affect the reverse sensors once neck is removed

Detaching a detachable towbar involves a straightforward process, but it can vary slightly depending on the manufacturer.

Here’s a step-by-step guide to safely remove it:

Tools/Equipment Needed:

  • Towbar key (for models with a locking mechanism)

  • Gloves (optional, for better grip and safety)

  • Mat to kneel on (Optional for comfort on the ground)

Steps to Detach a Tow Trust Detachable Towbar:

1. Ensure the Vehicle is Stationary and Safe

  • Park the vehicle on a flat surface, engage the handbrake, and make sure it's secure before attempting to remove the towbar.

2. Unlock the Towbar (If It’s Lockable)

  • Locate the locking mechanism on the towbar neck. Many detachable towbars feature a key-operated lock to secure the towbar in place.

  • Insert the key into the lock and turn it to the unlock position.

  • This will release the towbar from its locked state.

3. Activate the Release Mechanism

  • Hold the handle or knob on the towbar (usually located on the neck or towards the ball mount).

  • Twist or pull the handle to engage the release mechanism. This action should allow the towbar to disengage from the mounting system.

  • Depending on the model, you may need to rotate the handle a specific number of times or in a certain direction (usually counterclockwise) until the towbar is loose.

4. Remove the Towbar

  • Once the release mechanism is disengaged, gently pull the towbar out from the socket or mounting bracket.

  • Be careful during removal, especially if it’s a heavy unit.

  • Make sure to support the towbar with both hands to avoid dropping it.

5. Store the Towbar Safely

  • After removing the towbar, store it in a dry, clean place, ideally in the protective storage bag that often comes with detachable towbars. This will protect it from dirt, rust, and any potential damage when not in use.

Additional Tips:

  • Check the manual: If you have the user manual for your specific towbar model, refer to it for precise instructions, as different models may have slightly different removal methods.

  • Regular Maintenance: Ensure the towbar and its locking mechanism are well-maintained and lubricated to make the process smooth.

  • Reinstallation: If you plan to reinstall the towbar later, make sure to keep the locking mechanism key safe and the towbar components clean.

  • Make sure that you detach your towbar regulary.

By following these steps, you should be able to safely and easily detach your Tow Trust towbar.

Detaching your towbar regularly is important for several reasons, primarily related to safety, maintenance, and performance. Here's why it's a good practice:

1. Prevent Corrosion and Rust

  • Moisture and dirt can accumulate around the towbar’s attachment points. Leaving the towbar connected for long periods, especially in damp or winter conditions, can lead to corrosion, which weakens the structure of the towbar.

  • By regularly detaching the towbar, you can clean and inspect it for any signs of rust or damage, ensuring it remains in good condition.

2. Maintain the Towbar's Functionality

  • Towing systems have moving parts that can become stiff or jammed if left unused for long periods. Regularly detaching and reattaching the towbar helps keep the joints, pins, and connectors in good working order.

  • Greasing or lubricating the towbar when it is detached will ensure that it operates smoothly and efficiently when you need it.

3. Protect Your Vehicle's Rear Bumper

  • If a detachable towbar remains attached while not in use, it can potentially cause damage to your vehicle’s rear bumper when parking or reversing.

  • By removing the towbar when not in use, you reduce the risk of bumping into obstacles or other vehicles, which can save you from costly repairs.

4. Improved Fuel Efficiency

  • Leaving a towbar attached can affect the aerodynamics of your vehicle, especially if you have accessories or a large towbar. This can result in increased fuel consumption.

  • Detaching the towbar when it’s not needed can help improve your vehicle’s fuel efficiency by reducing drag.

5. Aesthetic Reasons

  • Many people prefer the look of their vehicle without a towbar permanently attached, especially when they’re not actively towing.

  • Detaching the towbar when not in use maintains the vehicle’s clean appearance, especially if you have a removable towbar designed for that purpose.

6. Prevent Theft

  • Removable towbars can be stolen if left unattended for long periods. Regularly detaching the towbar and storing it safely when it's not in use helps to reduce the risk of theft.

7. Reduce Wear and Tear on Components

  • If you regularly leave the towbar attached, parts such as the towball and electrical connections may become more prone to wear and tear from environmental exposure, even when not towing.

  • Removing it regularly helps protect these components from unnecessary exposure to elements like sun, rain, and road salt, prolonging their lifespan.

By detaching the towbar regularly, you can ensure it stays in good condition, reduce potential damage to your vehicle, and maintain the overall safety and performance of your towing system.
