Detaching a TowTrust detachable towbar is generally straightforward, but it's important to follow the correct steps to ensure safety and avoid damaging the mechanism. Here’s a step-by-step guide for most TowTrust detachable towbars (vertical systems):
Detaching a TowTrust Detachable Towbar
Before You Begin:
Make sure the vehicle is parked on a level surface.
Ensure the trailer or towing load is disconnected.
Have your towbar key ready

Step 1: Remove Safety cover
All models come with a cover over the lock or release mechanism. Remove this if present.

Step 2: Unlock the Towbar
Insert the key into the lock on the detachable neck.
Turn the key 180 degrees to the unlocked position by turning clockwise.
Press the key in slightly before turning.
Remove the key from the barrel.
Step 3: Release the Mechanism
Push the knob inward, then rotate it clockwise until you feel or hear a click.
The towbar should now disengage from the housing.

Step 4: Remove the Towbar
Pull the towbar neck straight out of the housing.
If it resists, gently wiggle it side to side while pulling.
Do not force it—if it won’t come out, double-check that it’s fully unlocked.
Step 5: Lock the Mechanism for storage
With the towbar detached, turn the knob back to its original position.
Remove the key and store it safely.
Step 6: Fit Protective Cover
Replace any dust or weather covers on the towbar housing to keep it clean and ready for future use.

How to Attach a Tow Trust Detachable Towbar Neck into the Housing
Tools Needed:
The detachable towbar neck
The towbar key
Step-by-Step Instructions:
Prepare the Housing:
Ensure the housing (socket) is clean and free of debris.
Make sure the protective cover is removed.
Unlock the Neck:
Insert the towbar key into the locking mechanism on the detachable neck.
Turn it to the "unlock" position indicated by a red colour.
Prepare the Neck for Insertion:
Rotate the locking handle clockwise or as instructed until it "clicks" into the ready position.
Insert the Neck into the Housing:
Align the neck with the housing
Push the neck firmly upward or inward until you hear a click. And the colour code has turned green. This means the locking mechanism has engaged.
Lock It:
Turn the key to the lock position.
Remove the key.
Close the key cover.
Check Secure Fit:
Try pulling and wiggling the neck to ensure it’s firmly locked.
Ensure the indicator is green as this shows correct attachment.
Tips:
Always follow the Tow Trust user manual for your specific towbar model which is provided to you in the blue storage bag.
If it doesn’t insert easily, don’t force it — check for dirt or incorrect alignment.
For detachable systems, never drive unless the neck is fully locked with the key removed.
A detachable towbar is a great addition for towing, but like any vehicle accessory, it can experience issues over time. Here are some common faults and how to resolve them:
Sticking or Jammed Towbar:
The detachable towbar gets stuck in the hitch or the mechanism won't release when you try to detach it.
Solution:
Check for any dirt, rust, or corrosion in the attachment mechanism.
Apply a lubricant (such as WD-40 or silicone spray) to the moving parts.
Gently tap with a rubber mallet (if safe) to loosen it, but avoid using excessive force that could damage the towbar.
Clean the towbar and receiver regularly to prevent buildup of dirt and grime.
Faulty Locking Mechanism:
The locking pin or mechanism is not engaging correctly, leaving the towbar insecure.
Solution:
Inspect the pin or lock for wear and tear, ensuring it clicks into place properly.
Lubricate the lock and pins with an appropriate lubricant to keep them moving freely.
If the locking mechanism is damaged, replace the worn parts. Often, replacement parts can be obtained from the manufacturer or supplier.
Loose Towbar
The towbar feels loose or wobbly when attached, which could affect towing stability.
Solution:
Check that the towbar is securely locked into place and that all components (such as bolts or pins) are tight.
If the attachment point or hitch is worn, replacing or repairing the hitch receiver may be necessary.
Inspect for any worn-out or damaged parts like locking bolts, and replace them.
Electrical Wiring Problems
Issues with the towbar's electrics (e.g., trailer lights not working, indicator or brake light malfunction).Solution:
Inspect the wiring for any visible signs of damage or wear.
Ensure the electrical connector on the towbar is properly seated and free of dirt or corrosion.
Check the fuse box in your vehicle to ensure the towing socket’s fuse hasn't blown.
If the issue persists please call us on 01903 947771 to arrange an appointment for a technician to come and check over your vehicle.
Towbar Not Aligning Correctly:
The towbar doesn’t align properly with the vehicle’s hitch, making it difficult to attach or detach.
Solution:
Ensure the towbar and hitch are both the correct type for your vehicle model and towbar system.
Check for misalignment or any damaged components in the hitch receiver.
If misalignment occurs after using the towbar for some time, there could be wear in the components, and these may need to be replaced.
Corrosion or Rust:
Rust or corrosion on the towbar or hitch receiver.
Solution:
Regularly clean and inspect the towbar, especially in areas exposed to moisture.
If rust appears, use a wire brush or abrasive pad to remove it and then apply a rust-resistant coating or spray.
Consider using a detachable towbar cover to protect it from weather elements when not in use.
Towbar Release Mechanism Not Engaging:
You can’t release the towbar from its hitch, either due to a mechanical failure or a blocked release mechanism.
Solution:
Inspect the release mechanism for any debris or obstructions that may be preventing it from working.
Apply lubricant to the release components to ensure smooth operation.
If the mechanism is faulty, consider replacing the release pin or lock.
Lost keys:
Identify the Key Code
Check the lock barrel on the towbar handle for a stamped key code, typically in the format "ACS01" to "ACS10". This code is essential for ordering a replacement key.
Once you have the key code, you can order replacement keys from the following:
